Spring Roof & Gutter Tips to Protect Your Home Before Summer

As warmer weather arrives, it's easy to focus on flowers and fresh landscaping. But don't forget what’s above you—your roof and gutters. Spring is the perfect time to inspect and maintain these critical components of your home before heavy summer storms roll in. A little effort now can prevent big expenses later on.

Begin by checking your roof for any damage left behind by winter. Look for cracked or missing shingles, signs of moss or algae, and areas where flashing may have pulled away. Even if your roof seems fine from the ground, it’s worth hiring a professional for a close-up inspection. Catching small issues now is far more affordable than dealing with a leak mid-July.

Gutters are your home’s unsung heroes during spring and summer rains. Clean out leaves, sticks, and debris that may have accumulated over winter. Clogged gutters can cause water to pool at the foundation or back up onto the roof, leading to potential water damage both inside and out. Make sure your downspouts are clear and direct water at least three feet away from your home.

While you’re at it, check for sagging or rusted gutters, loose spikes, or leaks at the seams. Secure any weak areas and seal up small holes with silicone or gutter repair tape. Installing gutter guards can also help reduce future buildup, especially if you live near large trees.

One overlooked area is the attic space directly beneath the roof. Look for signs of moisture, mold, or light penetration. These indicators can signal roof damage that might not yet be visible from the outside. Ventilation in this space is key to preventing heat and moisture buildup during the hotter months.

Staying proactive with your roof and gutters doesn’t just protect your property—it helps maintain its value and curb appeal. A well-maintained exterior reassures potential buyers and saves you from emergency repairs down the road. Spring is your window to prepare before summer storms
